Christmas Fun

We have had a lot of fun leading up to Christmas. Several groups have come in to sing and we have enjoyed some wonderful, fun Christmas programs. We cut out sugar cookies and baked them. Then we decorated them for the Christmas party. And what a great party we had! The west wing sang Christmas songs to us and the east wing did a special presentation of "It Must Be Santa". Santa arrived with presents for all and he even brought his elf to help.

A Visit from Big Chuck

Hi everyone,

We had a great visit from Chuck D'Imperio, the DJ from WDOS radio station. He joined us during our Happy Hour on Friday and talked about local history and happenings in the area. What a great speaker he is! He had us all spellbound. Before he left he put on his Santa hat and read us the story "The Night Before Christmas".

Cleo came to visit.

Monday we had a visit from Cleo, a bulldog/boxer mix loaded with charm and personality. Cleo comes to see us on a regular basis and the residents have gotten very fond of her. She lives at the Delaware Valley Humane Society shelter in Sidney, NY. Hampshire House has "adopted" the shelter and makes donations of bedding and other necessities. We just donated a handmade quilt to them to raffle off. Karen Crawford, the shelter manager, says they have the capacity for 37 dogs and 75 to 80 cats and usually they are nearly full, especially with cats. Anyone interested in donating or adopting can learn more about the shelter at: http://www.delawarevalleyhumane.org/. And oh, sorry folks, Cleo is not available for adoption!

Visiting with the students

Hi everyone,

We are continuing our partnership with Hartwick College Nursing program again this year. The gerontology class comes in to work on their communication skills with our residents. This will continue through December. Our residents are happy to share their knowledge and life history, then they give them a tour of their home.

Hi everyone,

We have been so busy getting ready for Christmas but we still found time to enter the downtown gingerbread contest again this year. What fun that was! The theme was favorite children's books. What a great idea. We decided to make our gingerbread house around everyone's favorite Christmas story, "The Night Before Christmas". We made the house like a doll house where you could look inside from the back and see "the children all nestled snug in their beds", the fireplace, Christmas tree and other furniture. The residents had a great time putting the green gum on the sides and front of the house for the siding as well as the wafers on the roof for the shingles. Santa and the eight tiny raindeer were placed on the front lawn.

All our hard work paid off as we again placed 3rd in the competion. Everyone felt very happy with the judges' decision.

Fun and Games

Here at Hampshire House everyone enjoys playing games. They're fun and help keep our residents active.
Can you catch the balloon?

Yes, I can!

I can too!
We also enjoy music. Carol comes in often and plays the piano. She plays many of the old songs so everyone can sing along and some even dance.

Veterans' Day Celebration

Hampshire House celebrated Veterans' Day by doing a program on this special day. Many residents shared their stories about World War II and other wars they and/or their loved ones participated in. We then all gathered in the dining room where we sang many of the patriotic songs, including the songs from each branch of the service. All of our veterans received red, white and blue balloons hung on their doors with a special sign that designated them as veterans.

Baking Monster Cookies

Hi Everyone,

We had a fun time last week joining in in many various activities. One that we really enjoyed celebrating was Cookie Monster's birthday. He was designed by Jim Henson in 1966. We made cookie monster cookies. They sure were fun to make and even more fun to eat. For those of you who are not familiar with them they do not contain any flour. Instead they are made up of good things to eat like peanut butter and oatmeal. Of course, they also contain lots of M&M's and chocolate chips! We had help from a couple of students from Oneonta State College. They not only helped us bake them but they enjoyed helping us eat the cookies too.

Hi Everyone,

What a busy, wonderful week we had last week. We celebrated Halloween in a big way this year because we had an added bonus. One of our residents reached her 100th birthday on Halloween day!

Friday evening we had some children come in to sing for us, show us their costumes and make a Halloween craft with us. What fun that was!

On Saturday we had a dance. Yes, a dance! The staff dressed in costumes and we all danced to Halloween music. Thank you Peggy Davis, for making the dance happen. Then came the birthday party. We sang Happy Birthday to Marion French and all enjoyed the cake that Sue Harp made. Not only was it all decorated in a Halloween theme but it was S0000 good. Thanks Sue, and Marion, we wish you many more birthdays.

Halloween Bingo

This afternoon we played Halloween Bingo. We had to spell out the word WITCH instead of Bingo to win. We had fun trying to remember to call out WITCH instead of BINGO!

Visit to the Butterfly Conservatory

The residents at hampshire enjoyed a visit to the Joseph Popp Butterfly Conservatory. They walked among hundreds of live, free flying butterflies and over twenty species of tropical birds from around the world in the 3,00 sq.ft. indoor conservatory herbarium. They also spotted some free-ranging tortoises, chamelions, frogs, and lizards hiding among the exotic plants. What a fun experience!

fondue party

Hampshire House had a great time last week. We enjoyed a program about Switzerland. We sure learned a lot of things about this country that we did not know. Then we enjoyed their favorite food - chocolate fondue. We tried bananas, strawberries, angel food cake and marshmellows dipped in the chocolate. They were all so good we could not decide which was better.

Fun with Crafts

One of our more popular activities here at Hampshire House is doing crafts. Residents get to enjoy a hands-on project that they can keep when they are done. They use them to decorate their rooms/doors. Many of the crafts residents make are also used to decorate the facility for seasonal occasions.

About Us

We are a state-of-the-art community overlooking the beautiful, rolling mountains and lush green valleys of upstate New York. Our comfortable atmosphere is coupled with excellent care provided by dedicated, compassionate staff. We promote independence and enhance the quality of life with a variety of activities. We plan our activities so that they meet the spiritual, social, physical and emotional needs of our residents.

We have been busy this month taking fall foliage trips to enjoy the colorful leaves in the hills that surround us. We also have some fun programs such as a fondue party coming soon. Many of our programs at the end of the month will be centered around Halloween. We also have a resident turning 100 on, would you believe, Halloween. So we are in the process of planning a really special birthday party.
